Plain-English glossary

Every term our guides use, explained the way we would explain it to a friend.

Affiliate link
A link that tells a company you came from us. If you buy, we may earn a commission; you pay the same price.
No-code builder
A tool that builds a website or app by dragging things around instead of writing code.
Domain
The address people type, like akacen.com. You rent it yearly from a registrar.
Hosting
The computer that keeps your site online. Builders usually include it.
Landing page
A single page with one job: explain one offer and get one action.
Conversion
When a visitor does the thing you wanted — buys, signs up, downloads.
Funnel
The path from first visit to purchase, and the pages along the way.
SEO
Writing and structuring pages so search engines can show them to the right people.
Keyword
The phrase someone types into a search box.
Backlink
A link from another website to yours. Good ones are earned, not bought.
Email list
The people who gave you permission to email them. The only audience you own.
Open rate
The share of people who opened an email. Useful as a trend, not a score.
Two-factor authentication
A second step at login, usually a code, so a stolen password is not enough.
Password manager
An app that creates and remembers strong, different passwords for every account.
VPN
A tunnel that hides your connection from the network you are on. It does not make you anonymous.
Data broker
A company that collects and sells personal details. Removal services chase them for you.
Payment processor
The service that takes card payments and pays you, minus a fee.
Chargeback
A customer reversing a card payment through their bank.
Margin
What is left after costs. Revenue is not income.
Recurring revenue
Money that arrives again each month without a new sale.
Free trial vs freemium
A trial ends; freemium stays free with limits. Check which one you signed up for.
API
A way for two pieces of software to talk to each other automatically.
Automation
Letting software do a repeated task — moving a form entry into a spreadsheet, for example.
Analytics
The record of what visitors did on your site.
UTM tag
A label added to a link so the destination knows which page sent the visitor.

What we never do

  • No paid rankings, paid reviews or paid guest posts.
  • No invented test results, numbers or testimonials.
  • No hidden partner links — every one is labelled.
  • No recommendation without a plain "not for" line.
